In the summer of 2016 I took up mala making. It started off as a way for me to get more malas (because a girl can never have too many) and then I quickly realized that I found it extremely meditative. I can easily pass away two-three hours. It also taps into my creative side because it allows me the chance to pick out beads, thread, accessories and visualize what it is I want to make.
Each mala that I make is one of I kind. I have yet to replicate any mala exactly and as of now, I have no plans to do so. If you see one you like in a photo, ask and I will make one similar for you (or if I still have it, you can buy it!), but I believe that like all things in life, things should be unique. With that said, if by chance you want to make a special order and buy two malas that are identical because they will have some symbolic meaning, this can be discussed.
I’m just starting out in the mala making “biz”, so I don’t have too many photos to share, but here are a few I’ve made recently. Look for more additions to come!
If you are interested in purchasing a mala from me, prices start at $30 and go up from there, depending on what gems and accessories you want. On average, you can expect to spend between $40 and $60.
If you would like a one of a kind, handmade mala, here are some things to consider:
If you have a budget you need to stick to, I can work with you to make it happen! It may limit the bead options you have to choose from, but there are always options to pick from!
Do you have a certain color or colors in mind? Some people like to go with their favorite color. Others like to go with a chakra color. If you aren’t familiar with chakras and their meanings, check out this page. There is even a chakra test you can take. If you take it, I suggest you choose stones that are in the color of the chakra you are deficient in (i.e. if the test comes up throat chakra, choose blue gems/stones)
Do you have a theme in mind? Maybe you want the mala to have an autumn vibe, or maybe you want it to feel like it was plucked from the ocean! Maybe you have a beautiful memory of a cherry blossom festival and you want the mala done in shades of pink to commemorate that, or perhaps you love dragons and you want the mala done in lava and black beads to give that earthy feel.
* What does this theme mean to you exactly? I can guide you with this if needed!
Perhaps you are struggling with speaking your truth or maybe you tend to get sick all the time. Maybe you need some extra strength to get through a tough time in your life. Perhaps you want a mala that dispels negative energy. There are stones/gems that have these qualities and can be used.
Do you have a specific gem/stone in mind already? If so, we can use that. If an entire mala of this stone doesn’t fit in your budget, we can always use a few of them instead.
Pendent or charm
Do you want one of these? Charms can be anywhere on the mala and even at the bottom with the tassel. Pendents are at the bottom in lieu of a tassel.
* Extra costs applied if not supplying your own charms and pendant
What type of tassel would you like? I use cotton, nylon and silk thread for my tassels. Also, we can discuss what color you would like, or if you would like to leave it to my discretion.
